Michigan Homeschool Legal Requirements

Homeschooling is regulated at the state level and changes may be made to the relevant statutes at any time. Always consult the actual state code for the most up to date and accurate legal information with regard to homeschooling. The links provided below contain information that may or may not be current.

Homeschool Legal Advantage (HLA)

5E - Non-Public Part-Time Pupils and Home Schooled Pupils
Michigan Department of Education Pupil Accounting Manual. A nonpublic pupil who attends a private, denominational or a parochial school or a pupil that is home schooled may be enrolled on a part-time basis in grades 1-12 in nonessential elective courses provided by a public school.

Compulsory School Attendance, Attendance Policies and Grades
From the Michigan Department of Education. Age of Attendance: The law in Michigan governing compulsory attendance requires a parent, legal guardian, or other person having control or charge of a child age six to sixteen to send the child to school during the entire school year, except under the limited circumstances specified in subsection (3) of section 380.1561. The exceptions include, but are not limited to, sending the child to a state-approved, nonpublic school or educating the child at home in an organized educational program. Attendance Exceptions: A child is not required to attend a public school in the following cases: A child who is being educated at the child’s home by his or her parent or legal guardian in an organized educational program in the subject areas of reading, spelling, mathematics, science, history, civics, literature, writing, and English grammar.

Homeschool HUB
The Homeschool HUB organizes programs and field trips, and a provides a communication network among homeschool families in the Michiana area. We are an inclusive group. Our goal is to provide opportunities for all homeschoolers to share educational resources and knowledge, and to enjoy the company of other homeschooling families in enriching group activities.

Michigan Homeschooling Co-ops

Ann Arbor
Explorers Home School Association
A co-op for the whole family. Explorers prides itself on offering a strong slate of academic and enrichment classes for all age groups. As a general rule, there are at least 3 different classes offered for every age level from age 4 through grade 12 in our morning program. In addition, students in grades 6-12 (who are often ready for both more academic rigor and social contact) have an opportunity for an additional 6-8 class choices each hour in the afternoon. In all, Explorers offers between 90 and 100 classes each semester.

Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti
Adventurers Homeschool Association
Adventurers is an interdenominational homeschool co-operative meeting in the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor area for shared classes and experiences. We meet weekly in two 12-week semesters just south of Ypsilanti. We primarily serve families with high school students "going the distance" in their home education.

Branch County
Christ Centered Home Educators
Dedicated to serving Christian homeschooling families in Branch County and surrounding communities. CCHE offers Christian families a network of home educators who cooperate in field trips, social events, co-op classes, and special programs.

Metro-Detroit area
Enrich Christian Homeschool Co-op
We are a Christian homeschooling enrichment program meeting in the Metro Detroit Area. We have families coming from Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. We offer classes for the K-12 grade home school family. Our classes are taught by the parents and we strive to keep our costs low.

Promoting the arts and culture of the Anishinabek. The Anishinabe Performance Circle will foster a greater understanding of our rich cultural heritage through educational cultural presentations. This increased exposure and access to the rich heritage of the Anishinabe people will help bridge ethnic and cultural relationships plus build strong community partnerships. The mission of the Anishinabe Performance Circle is aimed at promoting and enhancing positive self images of Anishinabe children through the use of traditional Anishinabe arts (storytelling, dance, music, and language), and preparing our youth as Anishinabe leaders in a multicultural society.

West Michigan Homeschool Fine Arts (WMHFA)
A non-profit organization based in the Grand Rapids area whose purpose is to assist and support families in the musical education of their home schooled children ages 9 and up. The programs offered by WMHFA are not designed to meet all the musical educational needs of a child; rather they are intended to supplement the musical training received in home schooling.

Academic Enrichment for Michigan Homeschoolers

We offer drop-off classes and private music lessons for home school students in grades K-12. Our specialties include science, art, communications (writing, public speaking, literature, drama), foreign languages, and private music lessons. We also offer physical education. In fact, we have a variety of enrichment and academic classes from which to choose.

Whaley House Museum "Then and Now" school program
Emphasis is placed on the technological advancements in America during the late 1800s. During a guided tour of the home, students will participate in a technology scavenger hunt and discover the similarities and differences of Victorian life to their own. (25 students maximum; 1 hour. $2.00 per student.)

Teenworks... is a Michigan based organization providing tutoring assistance from a Christian world-view to home schooling families. Teenworks provides a wide variety of classes- (the “Works”) and tutors for K-12 and recently has expanded it’s offerings to Accelerated Distance Learning (Collegeworks) and online (Webworks) classes.

Novi Christian School provides home school students with the academic validation they need while allowing parents the freedom to educate their children in their own way. Koinonia is a Homeschool Support Group that has been active in the community since the early 1990’s. Koinonia is a Christian organization, the purpose of which is to assist parents in their decision to home educate their children. Capital Homeschool Athletic Program
CHAP exists to serve Jesus Christ, homeschool parents and their children. Our purpose is to provide homeschool children with opportunities, through competitive athletics, to develop physically, spiritually, and learn to display Christ-like character. CHAP Chariots was founded in 2002 and has grown to 15 basketball teams who play in the winter, a girls soccer team that plays in the spring, and boys Varsity and 7th and 8th grade football teams which play in the fall.
