Since 1986 the SMARTS Summer Institute, the flagship program of the Southeastern Massachusetts Arts Collaborative, has offered young people a unique opportunity to work with some of New England’s finest artists as they explore and learn through process and performance in creative writing, dance, drama, film/video, instrumental, vocal and visual arts. Open to children ages 3-18, the Summer Institute is about ideas, innovative and dynamic thinking and collaborations and is the only opportunity in southeastern Massachusetts for arts interested and talented young people to be exposed to so many arts, taught by so many different artists, all under the same roof. The creative work and discipline training revolves around a unifying theme that provides fertile ground for collaborations between the arts disciplines and helps to foster a range of perspectives. The 2010 theme is “Give & Take”. Recitals, the creation of outdoor community art works, one-minute musicals, final performances, literary magazines and social events are part of the creative electricity that takes place during this intensive 4-week immersion into the arts. Education Programs at New England Quilt Museum
Parents of home-schooled students may organize a group of five or more for a six-week quilting class. The program typically runs two hours per session during regular museum hours. The class objective may be designed in conjunction with art, geography, history/social studies, math, reading or science curriculum. The first week, students learn about The FUNdamentals of Quilting, complete the Scavenger Hunt, and begin sewing their individual needlebooks for storing their own needles, pins and thread. In subsequent weeks, students select a variety of fabrics, design patchwork quilt blocks, and learn the basics of hand sewing. Students arrange their blocks and assemble them by machine to complete a small quilt. The final week is set aside for their quilt show and a presentation to friends and family about their individual project. Fabric, patterns and related supplies are provided. Contact the museum for fee information.
